Information about ECE 104

What is ECE 104?
ECE 104 (UN/ECE104) is a new legislation issued by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, relating to guidelines for retro-reflective line and contour safety markings of heavy goods vehicles and trailers.
Who does ECE 104 apply to?
ECE 104 will apply to all heavy goods vehicles and trailers over 3.5 ton. All newly registered heavy goods vehicles in the UK, from July 2011, will be required by law to be fitted with retro-reflective safety markings. ECE 104 is already mandatory in several countries.
What are the ECE 104 guidelines?
The ECE 104 guidelines set the standards for reflectivity and durability of retroflective marking tapes to indicate the width, length and height of heavy goods vehicles. This involves the placing of retroflective tape on both the rear and sides of heavy and long vehicles. As retroreflective tape reflects the light from headlamps of approaching vehicles, it will further improve conspicuity and help prevent accidents.
